1. Purpose
ASCO issues public statements, engages with government and law enforcement matters, and handles donated funds. This Code of Ethics sets out the principles that guide how we do that work honestly and fairly.
2. Ethical Principles
- Honesty — we do not knowingly publish false or misleading information in our name.
- Transparency — our governance structure, registration details, and contact information are published openly on this Website.
- Accountability — we hold ourselves to the same standards of accountability we ask of public institutions.
- Fairness — we aim to represent all sides of an issue accurately before taking a public position.
3. Ethics in Public Advocacy
ASCO comments publicly on matters of civic and national importance, including governance, immigration, and the criminal justice system. In doing so:
- We do not support, incite, or condone xenophobia, vigilantism, or unlawful action of any kind;
- We distinguish clearly between calling for accountability and making unproven allegations of criminal conduct against a named individual;
- Media statements issued in ASCO's name are reviewed by the Executive Director or Official Spokesperson before publication;
- We correct the record promptly and visibly if a published statement is later found to contain a material error.
4. Conflicts of Interest
Executive Structure members and staff must not use their position to advance a personal, political-party, or business interest under the banner of ASCO's advocacy work. Any personal interest that could reasonably appear to influence a public position taken by ASCO must be disclosed to the Executive Structure.
5. Fundraising Ethics
ASCO will not use false, exaggerated, or fabricated claims — including invented statistics or testimonials — to solicit donations. Donated funds are applied to ASCO's stated objectives, and financial records are maintained in accordance with the Companies Act, 2008.
6. Whistle-blower Protection
Anyone who, in good faith, reports suspected unethical conduct, financial misconduct, or a breach of this policy will not face retaliation, demotion, or exclusion as a result of that report. Reports can be made to info@africansolidaritycivic.org, or in line with the reporting steps set out in our Code of Conduct.
